Next Stop Ahead
Next Stop Ahead came to me as I traveled home from San Francisco for my 31st birthday. Because JFK is in the backyard of my family’s home, I wanted to capture the big, beautiful scene that was Southeast Queens. People entering New York City think these houses may be run down or forgotten as they travel to Brooklyn or Manhattan, but I knew these houses hold families, outdoor gardens, swimming pools, card games, and small lives of people who are the veins of the city. Queens is a sub-city. We are the suburbs, but also have a grittiness to us that makes us untouchable. Queens is also one of the last boroughs (next to the Bronx) that gentrification hasn’t shredded apart. I implore you, on your next visit to the city, to look out the AirTrain windows and look at the lives of the people whom you wouldn’t even second glance at.
